Orford, Sudbourne Wood Loop: Suffolk

January 2015

A chilly week in January didn’t stop Runviewer exploring some beautiful Suffolk countryside. This route begins in the town of Orford, famous for it’s medieval castle and Orford Ness – a spit of land at the mouth of the river Ore.

Our route starts just North of the square, at the junction of Ferry Road and Front Street. We quickly head off road into some typically expansive Suffolk countryside.

Our guide – an Orford local – leaves us at All Saints Church in Sudbourne, where we loop through the breathtaking Tunstall Forest and back to the town past pig farms and… if you look closely… some very sweet piglets. Here’s an ordnance survey style map so you can keep track of all the footpaths.

NEARBY AMENITIES

The town centre is small, with three pubs, a bakery and a few little shops, but the larger town of Woodbridge is about 25 minutes away by car.

Nearest stations are Woodbridge (25 mins by car) and Melton (20 minutes by car) mostly because the vast Rendlesham Forest stands between these towns and the marshes that hug the coast.

Visitors to the area can’t miss Sutton Hoo, the historic Anglo-Saxon burial site just outside of Woodbridge. The famous arts venue and concert hall Snape Maltings – home to Benjamin Britten’s Aldeburgh Music Festival – is about ten minutes away by car and boasts plenty of restaurants, shops and galleries for some post-forest browsing.
